Understanding Firefighter PPE
Do you know how your gear protects you when you respond to a fire? Most firefighters put on their personal protective equipment every call, but many do not stop to think about how it actually works. Think of your gear as a system designed to protect you from extreme heat and dangerous conditions. Do you understand how the layers block heat? Do you know the warning signs that your gear may be reaching its limits?
When was the last time you carefully checked your equipment? Cleaning and inspecting your gear is not just a task to complete. It helps make sure your protection works when you need it most. Dirty or damaged gear can put you at risk. Are you certain your equipment is ready for the next call?
Have you thought about how your gear affects your body? While it protects you from heat, it also holds heat in and adds weight. This can increase stress on your heart and body. Are you staying hydrated? Are you taking time to rest and recover after tough calls?
Wearing your gear is not enough. Understanding how it works, how to care for it, and how it impacts your health can make you safer. The real question is simple. Do you truly understand the gear that protects you? Here is a video that can help us better understand our gear!
